👶🍼Roots of Empathy👶🍼
The children in P5/6 were so excited to see baby Déarbhla and her mummy Fiona last Wednesday. The boys and girls noticed so many changes in Déarbhla. She has 2 new teeth, her hair is getting longer and she’s interacting through blowing bubbles and babbling sounds.
This month's theme, Theme 7, was all about communication. The children observed how baby Déarbhla communicates by using body language. They discovered that when parents are attuned with their baby, like Fiona is with Déarbhla, they can pick up on the subtle cues that alert them when the baby is hungry, sad or tired. When Déarbhla is sad Fiona is quick to spot it and pick her for a little cuddle and some reassurance.
We also learned that by singing and reciting nursery rhymes to babies they develop communication and language skills. We watched baby Déarbhla carefully as we sang Humpty Dumpty and Jack and Jill...and the children were able to see how she learns when she's relaxed and having fun.
The children drew pictures of their favourite nursery rhymes and compiled them in a book as a gift for our 'Tiny Teacher'! The children got curious about what it would feel like if you couldn't use words to communicate and they learned the importance of making sure everyone feels included by learning to communicate in different ways, for example by using sign language or assistive technology.
Many thanks as always to our Roots of Empathy family! 💕
